Chiefs Coach Eric Bieniemy Shouldn't Take Commanders OC Job, Says Washington Ex RGIII
The Washington Commanders are interviewing Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy today to serve on Ron Rivera's coaching staff. But one former Washington player doesn't believe Bieniemy should take the job.
Robert Griffin III, who played four seasons with Washington from 2012-15, is no stranger to giving his opinion on social media, and he shared why he thinks Bieniemy shouldn't move on to Washington.
"Eric Bieniemy should ONLY LEAVE Kansas City for a Head Coaching Opportunity," Griffin tweeted. "Miss me with that “gotta prove himself” narrative. 15 of the 21 Head Coaches hired in the last 3 years were first time Head Coaches. Bieniemy has proven himself more than EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM."
Bieniemy has proven himself. He's led the Chiefs offense to a top 5 spot in the league in every season since 2018. That's why the Commanders want to bring him on to the staff.
For the past few years, Bieniemy has been a top head coaching candidate due to his success, but no team out of the 14 he's interviewed with have hired him as a head coach.
Many have insinuated that Bieniemy's race has been a factor in why he hasn't been hired. Despite having two Super Bowl rings, he's been passed over by other prospective first-time coaches, many of whom are Caucasian.
Regardless of why Bieniemy has or hasn't gotten a job promotion outside of the Chiefs, he's still a free agent. The Commanders are looking to hire the best person for their opening, and it seems like it may be Bieniemy's as long as he wants it.
He doesn't need the job to prove himself, he's already done that. The Commanders need him in order to improve, and if he's willing to leave a proven winner for an unproven middle-of-the-pack team, Washington will be over the moon.
