Former Duke Basketball Champion Identified as Commanders Bidder

Former Duke Blue Devils basketball player and NCAA Tournament Champion Brian Davis has submitted a bid to purchase the Washington Commanders from Dan Snyder.
In this story:

Dan Snyder will sell the Washington Commanders. That much we're sure of.

What we're not sure of is when everyone will finally find out who the new owner of the Commanders will be as it now appears the expectations it might happen prior to the NFL league meetings this week have been met with more disappointment.

There was, however, news on the new ownership front Monday morning even if it didn't come from Phoenix where the league meetings are being held, or involve an official sale.

According to The Sports Junkies on 106.7 The Fan, former Duke Blue Devils basketball player Brian Davis is trying to get into the business of running an NFL franchise.

"He has raised enough capital, I am told," said The Sports Junkies. "He's raised $7 billion...and has put in an official offer to buy the Washington Commanders."

Davis attended high school in Bladensburg, Maryland before attending Duke from 1988-1992.

He and his teammates won two NCAA Championships and Davis was a 2nd Round draft pick of the Phoenix Suns in the 1992 NBA Draft.

Davis played the 1993 season for the Minnesota Timberwolves, his only official NBA action, and averaged just five and a half minutes per game that year.

But his NBA career isn't the only thing that failed to live up to his collegiate success.

In October 2006, Davis and former Blue Devils teammate Christian Laettner entered into an agreement to purchase 70 percent of the NBA's Memphis Grizzlies.

At the time of the agreement, Davis had also indicated that Laettner would return to play for the Grizzlies as well.

That deal fell through because of insufficient funding, however, and the end result included hurt feelings and lawsuits including NBA legend Scottie Pippen suing both men resulting in a $2.55 million judgment.

Additionally, the two teammates started a real estate company that resulted in more broken promises and even more millions of dollars in lawsuits.

In 2016 it was reported that Laettner owed more than $14 million to several creditors and private individuals including former NFL running back Jonathan Stewart - because there has to be a Carolina Panthers connection to every Commanders story, right?

It's unclear how much of that 2016 debt reported also involves Davis, but many of the business missteps taken by Laettner over the years have involved his teammate being by his side.

And that's certainly something that's going to give NFL owners pause before considering the approval of Davis as a new owner in Washington.

If it even gets to that point.
