Commanders President Jason Wright 'Very Confident' About Franchise's Direction
With the impending sale of the Washington Commanders, one of the people that has flown under the radar is team president Jason Wright.
Wright, 40, became the president of the Commanders in August 2020. With that, he became the youngest and first Black president in the NFL. He also played for seven years in the NFL.
Wright opened up about the process and his role in the impending sale of the Commanders along with his expectations for the season on The Adam Schefter Podcast on Tuesday.
“I’m very confident,” Wright said. “Up-and-coming might not roll off the tongue for us in the same way it does for the Detroit Lions...So there’s a little bit of this that’s a narrative in the way that the team is thought of. We were 8-8-1 last year and a couple of very frustrating games away from being in the playoffs and seeing the momentum both in fandom and toward building toward a championship.
“I think we’re much closer than folks realize.”
The Commanders are reportedly on the verge of being sold to billionaire Josh Harris, who owns the New Jersey Devils and Philadelphia 76ers, for $6.05 billion. The deal has reportedly reached the point where it needs NFL approval.
Throughout the process, Wright noted the multiple roles he has had to play, including supporting co-owners Dan and Tanya Snyder.
“I’m still involved where they need me,“ Wright said. “Wherever me, or my team were needed to provide information in response to due diligence to do management presentations and the like, we absolutely bent over backward to do those things and that will continue to be a priority. I am their primary advisor as they’re doing this from the team side.”
Even with all of the change going on across the organization, it still appears that there is a role for Wright as he helps ease the transition.
