Commanders QB Sam Howell Starting to 'Be The Man'

Sam Howell is slowly beginning to look like the Washington Commanders starting quarterback.
In this story:

After starting just one game last season, Washington Commanders quarterback Sam Howell is essentially starting his rookie campaign in 2023.

While he has the experience of being around an NFL locker room for a year, this upcoming season should be very different from 2022 for Howell. On top of playing in a new offense under Eric Bieniemy, Howell is expected to be the starter (or at least have a bigger role) in 2023.

Someone who has gone through the motions with Howell under the past year is tight end Cole Turner, a fellow fifth-round selection in 2022. Turner is beginning to notice some changes within Howell's demeanor in practice, and it's all for the good.

“He’s the one starting to break down the huddle as a team -- not just the offense,” Turner said via ESPN. “He’s saying something after a bad play, he’s not afraid to talk to someone. He’s started to step up and be the man.”

Fellow second-year pro Jahan Dotson also echoed similar sentiments towards Howell on the "Jim Rome Show."

"I think we got our quarterback situation settled," Dotson said. "I think Sam Howell's gonna be our guy."

Howell is gaining the respect of his teammates, a desired quality in someone expected to lead the team, as he begins to transform from third-stringer to the most important player on the Commanders.
