NFL Draft: Biggest Bust in Commanders History Never Touched The Field

Looking back at one of the best Penn State Nittany Lions offensive linemen in history who became the Washington Commanders' biggest NFL Draft miss ever.
In this story:

The history of the Washington Commanders' team name is a short one, with only receiver Jahan Dotson stepping onto a first-round stage to represent the organization under that branding.

And while some would like to build clear walls between the Commanders' name and what came before It, the history will forever be linked.

So, as good as Dotson looked in year one - Offensive Rookie of the Year material had it not been for a nagging hamstring injury suffered in Week 5 - the franchise still has to carry the weight of its worst first-round pick ever.

Both Dotson and that prospect just so happen to come from the same school, as Penn State offensive lineman Andre Johnson stands out among the worst missed picks any NFL franchise has ever had.

Johnson can do what Washington can't, and draw a clear line between his collegiate career and professional one.

As a member of the Nittany Lions, Johnson is regarded as one of the best offensive linemen to ever dress for them.

And his play over three seasons there led to his being selected with the 30th pick in the 1996 NFL Draft.

"Imagine this: Your top draft pick, 30th overall, never gets on the field as a rookie," wrote 33rd Team when identifying Johnson as the team's biggest miss in franchise history. "Then is cut in training camp the next year. That's Johnson, who, to put it simply, couldn't block."

Johnson would go on to spend time with the Detroit Lions before ultimately finding his way out of the NFL altogether.

A sad football ending for one member of Penn State's No. 6 ranked NFL Draft class of all time, and teammate of new Commanders receiver coach Bobby Engram.

Washington clearly wants to avoid a situation like this one again, especially with the offensive line being a potential target for its first-round pick again this year.
