Commanders Dan Snyder Sale: NFL Sets Two Dates For Potential Vote
The Snyders' tenure as owners of the Washington Commanders is finally nearing its end.
CBS Sports reports that NFL Owners have been notified of two dates to vote and make the sale official, July 20 and Aug. 8. If approved, the Josh Harris-led group would buy the Commanders for $6.05 billion. Among the people in Harris' group buying the franchise are NBA legend and Hall of Famer Magic Johnson.
Harris will need at least 24 votes from NFL owners to be approved as Washington's new owner. Harris also owns the Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Devils. Harris has been the owner of the 76ers since 2011 and has owned the Devils since 2013.
Harris' group and Dan Snyder first agreed to the deal on May 12. If approved, it'd be the most expensive sale in North American sports, surpassing the Denver Broncos being sold for $4.65 billion to the Walton-Penner group in 2022.
With the impending sale, Snyder's tumultuous tenure as owner of the Commanders may finally be nearing its end. Snyder has owned the franchise for 24 years.
Since Snyder became the man in charge in 1999, Washington has only won 43% of its games and only two playoff games. In the 24 years prior, the Commanders won 58% of its games, 16 playoff games and three Super Bowls (1983, 1988, 1992).
Along with the on-the-field struggles, Washington has had multiple alleged scandals related to workplace abuse under his watch.
While the franchise hasn't won a playoff game since 2006 or a Super Bowl in 31 years, the sale being approved on July 20 or Aug. 8 to Harris may bring a similar feeling to Washington fans as the Snyder era finally comes to a close.
