Commanders Sale Watch: Purchase Coming Soon?
The Washington Commanders were purchased by the current owner Dan Snyder in 1999.
"I'm not focused on the money, I'm focused on the opportunity and the dream," Snyder said at the time according to a Washington Post article published after the NFL owners voted to approve his purchase of the team. "Hundreds of fans have written to me with their support and suggestions...Your most pressing issue is no different than mine. You want to win, we want to win, and we're going to deliver that."
Recent allegations suggest Snyder has been more focused on money than he let on as a rookie owner, and now the only thing Commanders fans are supporting and suggesting is the end of his control over the franchise.
And according to reports from Saturday night into Sunday morning, that time may be coming soon.
While several people have pointed to a sale being imminent, none is citing any really solid sources, but locally respected NBC Sports Washington reporter JP Finlay tweeted, "Commanders Sale news: was in red zone and now 1st and Goal," Saturday night.
Meanwhile, the lack of local or major national confirmation of the rumors has cast a shadow of doubt.
Of course, under a shadow of something is the only way Snyder's time with the organization could come to an end, right?
Since stating he was more focused on winning than money loads of accusations have surfaced that have led everyone to the crossroad we stand at today.
Some of those include efforts to withhold money from other NFL owners and fans alike, while others go well beyond financial improprieties.
And while he stated winning was his priority, Washington has experienced just five winning seasons under Snyder and only two postseason victories.
It's been a steep and far fall for a franchise that won three Super Bowls in a 10-season span at one point.
Additionally, Ben Standig of The Athletic pointed out an unusual characteristic of recent Commanders contracts that, "makes sense in conjunction with owner Dan Snyder's anticipated franchise sell-by date."
Washington fans are understandably anxious for the proverbial 'other shoe' to finally drop as it feels like they've been watching it fall for decades.
The reports are unconfirmed at this time, but there are signs pointing to the end being near.
And with that end, a new beginning for the Commanders and their fans who desperately want to be holistically proud of their team.
