Commanders 'Got a Good One!' in QB Sam Howell, Says Bills Coach
The Washington Commanders entered this season hoping to see Sam Howell assert himself as the team's long-term solution at quarterback.
Through two games, Howell has only helped his cause, guiding the Commanders to a 2-0 record while completing just under 66 percent of his passes and gaining 501 yards through the air with three touchdowns and one interception.
Howell was particularly impressive in Sunday's 35-33 victory over the Denver Broncos, as he completed 27 of 39 attempts for 299 yards and two touchdowns with no turnovers.
Now, Howell will turn his attention to the Buffalo Bills, who sit at 1-1 and are coming off a dominant 38-10 home win against the Las Vegas Raiders.
And for as much as Howell respects the Bills - he noted this week is a great opportunity to see how Washington stacks up - it's evident that Buffalo respects the young signal caller just as much.
Bills coach Sean McDermott helped draft Josh Allen and watched him into develop into an All-Pro quarterback; McDermott knows what it takes to thrive at the sport's highest level ... and he thinks Howell is well on his way.
"He's been very impressive to this point, and it doesn't appear it's too big for him," McDermott said. "It looks like they've got a good one on their hands."
Rivera was pleased with Howell's performance in Denver, noting he made strides in his decision making with throwing passes away and running when necessary, creating a "really positive" showing.
The next challenge becomes passing the litmus test against Allen and the Bills, and while the Commanders will enter as underdogs, they're filled with faith in their ascending quarterback.
Kickoff between Washington and Buffalo is set for 1 p.m. on Sunday at FedEx Field.
