Rivera: Commanders Need 'Insurance Policy' for Camaron Cheeseman

Washington Commanders long snapper Camaron Cheeseman's early season struggles have caught the attention of head coach Ron Rivera.

The Washington Commanders beat the Denver Broncos by the skin of their teeth on Sunday, 35-33. It didn’t have to be that way.

Kicker Joey Slye was only two-of-four on his field goal attempts. One of them, a 59-yarder, can be chalked up to Denver’s altitude prompting some ill-advised aggression. The other, though, can be pinned on long snapper Camaron Cheeseman.

Slye’s first attempt of the day, a 49-yard attempt, sailed hopelessly right of the uprights. A botched snap from Cheeseman disrupted the fragile mechanics of a field goal, and the Broncos would score on the ensuing drive.

Cheeseman’s snaps have been a consistent issue dating back to the summer. Essentially, if fans know the name of their team’s long snapper, there’s a problem. The Commanders worked out five long snappers on Tuesday.

While the Washington faithful were calling for Cheeseman’s job, head coach Ron Rivera spoke about the team’s long-snapping situation.

“This is something we have to do because it can’t happen every week because it could cost you a game,” Rivera said. “It really could have … we need to have an insurance policy. If we need to do something, we’re going to do it because it’s what’s best for this football team.”

Tuesday’s workout seemed to be inconclusive, or perhaps a testament to Rivera’s loyalty. They opted not to make any move, at least for now.

“To be quite honest, it is just his inconsistency,” Rivera added. “The last thing you want is to have it cost you a point or two or three. That could be the difference in a football game. That’s something we have to be prepared to protect ourselves against.”

Washington has found itself undefeated through two weeks with one-possession wins against uninspiring teams. Staving off losses the rest of the way likely lies upon the margins, like quality special teams.

Simply put, if Cheeseman’s struggles continue, the Commanders will be forced to make a move. His seat is hotter than ever, and at this point, another bad snap can end his stint in Washington.

The special teams will have the opportunity to improve on Sunday against the Buffalo Bills.
