Commanders Can 'Shock' People, Says Analyst

The Washington Commanders' changes this offseason may lead to a big year.
In this story:

No team had more significant changes throughout their organization than the Washington Commanders.

From new ownership to a new quarterback and offensive scheme, the Commanders will look much different compared to the team that finished last in the NFC East last season.

Amid those changes, ESPN analyst Louis Riddick thinks they can make some noise if quarterback Sam Howell and offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy can mesh.

"If Sam Howell can take that step and really gel with Eric and the kind of offense he wants to put in, and Eric builds it around him and his strengths and some of the stuff he did earlier in his career at UNC, this team is going to shock," Riddick said on the RIch Eisen Show. "They've got talent galore."

Riddick was a safety in the NFL for seven seasons and played for four teams. After his playing career, Riddick was a pro scout for Washington (2001-2004), then became the director of player personnel (2005-2007) before joining the Philadelphia Eagles' front office (2008-2013).

Bieniemy's track record speaks for itself after winning two Super Bowls in five years with the Kansas City Chiefs as the offensive coordinator. Riddick also noted how much Bieniemy likes Howell and the skill position players Washington has.

The other change that has Riddick high on Washington was Josh Harris buying the team from Dan Snyder

"When your bosses are those kinds of people, and you come into the building, and you feel supported, it's positive, all going in the same direction, no BS, that pays huge dividends down the road," Riddick said.

All of the changes that have taken place in Washington may be what they need to maximize its roster. If they give the Commanders the boost they need to compete in the NFC East, Riddick will be one of the people who isn't shocked when they're in the thick of the playoff race late in the season.
