Commanders' Sam Howell Struggles vs. Bills; QB Change Coming?

Sam Howell threw four interceptions for the Washington Commanders in their loss against the Buffalo Bills.

Washington Commanders quarterback Sam Howell is shaking his head after his worst performance of the season in a 37-3 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday afternoon at FedEx Field.

Howell was dismal at best, completing 19 of 29 passes for 170 yards and four interceptions. That begs the question ... should the Commanders make a change at quarterback?

While Howell's performance was poor on Sunday, it shouldn't erase the positive development he's made from the first two games. Coming into Sunday's Week 3 contest, Howell completed over 65 percent of his passes for 501 yards, three touchdowns and an interception and finished comebacks in both wins.

However, this is certainly a step backwards from the progress he has made this season.

The Bills presented the biggest challenge for Howell so far, but the schedule doesn't get much easier for the Commanders.

Next week, Washington plays the Philadelphia Eagles and then must bounce back quickly for a Thursday Night Football contest against the Chicago Bears.

If Howell continues to trend in the wrong direction for these two games, it would give the Commanders an opportunity to prepare backup Jacoby Brissett for a longer preparation period before their Week 6 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons.

Brissett has 48 starts under his belt across his first seven seasons and was brought in as a safety net for Howell. He may not be needed at the moment, but there's a chance he may need to get a little more loose if Howell continues to struggle.
