Washington Commanders' Sam Howell on Dismal Loss: 'I Didn't Give My Team a Chance to Win!'
As far as a poor performance goes for the Washington Commanders this season, the 31-19 loss to the New York Giants could be the worst.
With six total turnovers, which included three interceptions and three fumbles, Washington simply couldn't get out of its own way despite a mammoth nine sacks on Giants quarterback Tommy DeVito.
For Sam Howell, when a team has that many turnovers, you aren't winning any games of football in the NFL.
“You turn the ball over that many times, you’re not going to win games,” Howell said. “It starts with me, I got to do a better job of taking care of the football, I didn’t. I didn’t give my team a chance to win today. We all just got to be better.”
On the Commanders' first two possessions of the game, they had two turnovers (interception and fumble) as things didn't get off to a good start. Washington was constantly fighting against the tide; in the end, the current's pull proved too strong.
Howell would finish his day completing 31 of his 45 passes for 255 yards, one touchdown, and those three interceptions (second game of three-plus interceptions).
It was a dark day for the Commanders as the Giants were there for the taking after the Dallas Cowboys brutally tore them apart last week, but they failed to get the memo.
As for Howell's performance, head coach Ron Rivera stated that his quarterback had good moments, but the turnovers killed the team's offensive drives.
“I thought he had his moments,” Rivera said. “He took a shot early on, not sure if that was a good decision, but he had some really good moments, moved the ball really well. Just can’t turn it over and kill your own drives.”
Somehow, Washington has to pick itself up off the canvas after this defeat and ready itself for Thursday Night Football as the Cowboys await fresh off handing the Carolina Panthers a 33-10 loss.
