Commanders Training Camp: TE Logan Thomas Among Week 2 Injuries
ASHBURN, Va. — The Washington Commanders escaped Week 1 of training camp without any injuries to note, but the same can’t be said of Week 2 as four players in total now have concerns to monitor moving forward.
After losing tight end Armani Rogers to an Achilles injury during the OTA and minicamp portion of offseason work, it was a good sign to see the Commanders get to Week 2 relatively healthy.
Injuries are a part of the game, however, and following the team’s second week of practices - and first with pads - the first injury of training camp camp, and the list of banged up players in Washington is starting to grow.
“Logan Thomas got a little calf strain. So out of an abundance of caution, we kept him off the field,” coach Ron Rivera said on Friday. “Emmanuel Forbes, they told me he tweaked his groin…[tight end] Curtis [Hodges] - he started to feel something in the hamstring upper glute, and we wanted to be careful again.”
These new ailments come on the heels of losing defensive lineman David Bada to torn triceps, making four players with known injuries after five days of practice in Week 2.
The good news here is that usage of the phrase “abundance of caution” by Rivera.
This was a popular phrase around last training camp while the team was trying to ease receiver Curtis Samuel into the offense after he dealt with injuries the year prior.
In the end, that abundance of caution scared some people outside of the organization, but it also led to Samuel’s second-best production season of his career.
Of course, the downside here is that two of the three players mentioned Friday are tight ends, a position group with a long history of being unable to stay healthy in the Commanders organization.
And nobody wants to see a first-round pick injured, even if it is minor and not much to be concerned about.
The storyline coming out of Friday’s practice was the aggression between the offense and the defense, but the real impact will be felt in Washington if some of these injuries aren’t as minor as we’re being told.
