Aaron Rodgers' Last Words: Jets Move on to Cowboys Week 2
FRISCO - It was supposed to be a Week 2 showdown, with Aaron Rodgers coming to town to give the Dallas Cowboys a chance to finally slay their dragon.
Instead, a season-ending Achilles injury sustained on the very first drive featuring the legendary QB in a New York Jets uniform killed that plan ... and now the Jets come to Dallas in Week 2 with a new starting quarterback, a desperate search for more help at that position, and some lingering words from the 39-year-old Rodgers.
"At halftime I just went in to check on him in the training room and just made sure I gave him a hug, told him I love him and it really hurt my heart,'' Jets receiver Garrett Wilson said in revealing a moment he shared with Rodgers. And what did the four-time MVP say to the brilliant young receiving prospect?
'Sorry, kid,'' Rodgers said.
"He said, 'Sorry kid,' and that he loved me back and that was it,'' Wilson said. "He brings a certain energy with him ... and we were trying to imitate it and win for him.''
The Jets were successful in that department, and able to get the 22-16 win in dramatic fashion due to a rare overtime walk-off punt return by undrafted rookie Xavier Gipson, who happens to be a Dallas native.
Rodgers' career might be over. But New York, like Dallas, is 1-0 and will attempt to push on while rallying around Zach Wilson. ... while at the same time searching for a free agent or trade option as backup help, with names like Nick Foles and Carson Wentz seemingly being the most realistic. (As opposed to names like Tom Brady and Colin Kaepernick.)
"Just truly heartbroken, for real,'' Wilson said. "We love Aaron.''
