‘Code Words’? San Francisco 49ers Downplay Trey Lance ‘Inside Info’ for Dallas Cowboys

San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch doesn't believe former quarterback Trey Lance sharing info with the Dallas Cowboys will create an unfair advantage on Sunday.

Despite not yet playing a down for the Dallas Cowboys, third-string quarterback Trey Lance has been the center of attention this week.

That's due to the fact that the Cowboys are facing Lance's former team, the San Francisco 49ers, in the most-anticipated matchup of Week 5. As the Cowboys look to avenge their previous two playoff defeats, a major storyline has been how Lance could potentially help Dallas against his former team. After offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer admitted that the Cowboys intend to pick Lance's brain, this story has dominated headlines.

For 49ers general manager John Lynch, though, any concerns about the situation are overblown. While he acknowledged that Lance could share some insight with the Cowboys, he doesn't believe it will lead to an unfair advantage.

"There is information you can share," Lynch said Friday on KNBR's "Murph and Mac" show, per 49ers Web Zone. "My experience with that as a player is it tends to screw you up more than it does help you. I mean, this isn't the Houston Astros over there banging a drum for fastballs. He can't do that over there. And now, everything's through the headset.

"I think the closest thing to it, back in the day, when coordinators actually used to signal things in, you could glean some things, and people did. ... There was more you could glean, but I do know that playing the quarterback position, he's probably been more privy to a lot of the scheme thoughts and all that, but I don't think there's a whole lot."

The 49ers are doing some internal scouting of their own. San Francisco recently signed former Dallas cornerback Anthony Brown, and Lynch said the 49ers will look to gain some insight on their opponent from him. Albeit, they won't spend too much time on it.

"So, do we try to glean? Sure, yes, some questions, but that's more about individual personnel than scheme," Lynch said. "If you get caught up in trying to guess things in scheme, maybe a code word here or there that can help you, but it's not something we're worried about, and I bet something that they haven't spent too much time focusing on."

Additionally, the 49ers also have an old Cowboys rival in former Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Javon Hargrave. Hargrave has been a thorn in Cowboys' sides, with 17 total tackles and two sacks in six games, and his insight on Dallas' offense is now an asset to the 49ers.

"He's definitely talked about the things that he was able to do, they were able to do in the past, going against those guys twice a year," 49ers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks said on Thursday.

Sunday night's game is a matchup of two NFC heavyweights, and only time will tell how much this "inside information" will affect the game.
