'Professor Prime'? Colorado Unveils Class Named After Dallas Cowboys Icon Deion Sanders

Where Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders goes, the spotlight follows. With his first season as the lead man in Boulder having come to a close, the attention has remained on Sanders and his ability to perpetually exist in the news cycle.

On Tuesday’ the university announced a class inspired by the former Dallas Cowboys cornerback. “Prime Time: Public Performance and Leadership” will grace some students’ syllabi when the course begins in the spring semester.

The course targets college athletes (and students in adjacent fields) who, by their talent and the gravity of Sanders, will likely interact with the media and balance the stressors of sports, school, and celebrity.

As the Buffaloes know, an uptick in attention is only as favorable as the product on the field. After a strong start to the season that included an upset of the 2022 championship runner-up TCU Horned Frogs, Colorado was outclassed in the second half of the season. They finished just 4-8 and won a single Pac-12 game.

Subsequently, the media darlings of September became a point of contention amongst college football pundits, with some criticizing Colorado for its flash but eventual lack of quality play.

“The course will focus on helping college athletes explore how to manage their time in college, prepare for career, manage their celebrity, identify when to best speak into their profit center, advocate for worthy causes, coordinate with sports agents, and how to interact with journalists and the media,” the school website detailed.

While Sanders won’t be teaching the class – a “variety of media experts” will – the lessons from Sanders’ professional career are intertwined with the nature of the course.

Even after a disappointing season, Colorado was a frequent topic of conversation. If the Buffaloes improve, that coverage will only increase. That process was kickstarted by the transfer portal, but Sanders has made some splashes on the recruiting trail, too.

Five-star offensive tackle Jordan Seaton was heavily pursued by top schools around the nation but decided to join Coach Prime in Boulder.

Sanders’ influence is real, and it’s spreading throughout campus, even if the results are yet to follow.
