Cooper Rush Re-Signs as Dak Prescott Backup; Cowboys Still Draft QB?

Cooper Rush is set to return to the Dallas Cowboys on a multi-year deal after helping keep the team afloat during Dak Prescott's injury in 2022.

What a rush!

CowboysSI.com has learned that the Dallas Cowboys are set to retain backup quarterback Cooper Rush, re-signing the soon-to-be seventh-year man on a two-year contract worth a maximum $6 million. Rush's first year and signing bonus are said to be fully guaranteed.

With the exception of a five-month stint with the New York Giants in 2020, the 29-year-old Rush has spent his entire career with the Cowboys since entering the league as an undrafted free agent out of Central Michigan in 2017. In that time, he has been Dak Prescott's most recurring understudy and he got his chance to shine when Prescott was forced to miss time with a finger injury in the early stages of last season.

In five starts, Rush guided the Cowboys to a 4-1 record and amassed 956 yards and five scores. Rush previously came through in relief for Dallas in the prior season, throwing for 292 yards in his first regular season start during a primetime win over Minnesota.

Back in Dallas for the next two seasons, Rush figures to have an inside track to retain his role as Prescott's backup. He's one of three passers back on the Cowboys' roster, joining the starter Prescott and Will Grier.

With starter Dak Prescott and backup Rush now locked in for 2023, will the Cowboys still select a quarterback during next month's NFL Draft? Owner Jerry Jones has already professed a desire to draft a young quarterback such as TCU's Max Duggan.
