Cowboys Jerry Jones In Love: Mistake on TCU QB Max Duggan?

Max Duggan of TCU "looked confident. And he was really throwing the ball around,” Cowboys boss Jerry Jones says. “He was certainly the most impressive quarterback in my mind.”

FRISCO - Ah, love in the springtime. There's nothing like it!

This is not a knock on Dak Prescott. This is not a knock on Max Duggan. This is not even a knock on Jerry Jones.

It is, however, a criticism of one sound NFL Draft philosophy, as stated this week by Jones in his media visit at The Senior Bowl ... being melded into another NFL Draft philosophy that is dangerously unsound.

The Cowboys are promising to use a pick in this year's NFL Draft to select a quarterback while at the same time also pledging allegiance to Prescott, suggesting he might be the Dallas QB "for the next 10 years.''

Jones' idea of the Cowboys being committed to drafting a quarterback in 2023, with the added note that he should have committed to drafting one every few years as a matter of policy, is accurate. (We explain in full here.)

And that eventually draftee, maybe, can be the TCU sensation Duggan, who at 6-2 and 204 lacks ideal size while having started the Horned Frogs season as a non-starter ...

But still. Maybe.

Some project Duggan (optimistically, we say) as a third-round pick, and good for him. Is he the next Colt McCoy? Another Sam Ehlinger? Life-long backup types? Those might be good comps, and we bring them up for a reason: They're "from here.''

Which is a terrible reason for a "scout'' to favor a player.

“He just looked comfortable. He looked confident. And he was really throwing the ball around,” Jones said, via Jori Epstein of Yahoo Sports. “He was certainly the most impressive quarterback in my mind.”

That's fine ... as long as 31 other GM's essentially agree. In other words, our sense is that Jerry's view is Duggan is absolutely colored by the fact that Max is a heck of a story, and that he's a local story.

If Max Duggan really does project as an NFL second-string guy early on, then that should not, can not, be an opinion held only by the Cowboys. The word for that would be "parochial,'' which to us is almost a dirty word.

We look forward to discovering whether the rest of the league agrees with the "most impressive quarterback'' rating that Duggan - again, no offense to him - is receiving from the GM in his own backyard.
