Cowboys Connection? DeAndre Hopkins Cut; Would Dallas Pay $20 Million?

DeAndre Hopkins didn’t include Dak Prescott on his recent list of favorite QBs … but there is no way that should preclude the Cowboys from putting in a bid on an added weapon in the NFL arms race.

FRISCO - DeAndre Hopkins spent a great deal of time in Dallas this offseason, leading to speculation that there might be a Dallas Cowboys connection - but we were always told here inside The Star that there was no Cowboys interest in trading for the All-Pro receiver.

OK. Understood? But what of the going-nowhere Arizona Cardinals - unable to find a trade partner - opted to simply cut him?

Because that’s exactly what just happened as Hopkins was released on Friday.

The Cardinals will eat a dead-money hit of $21 million in 2023 (or spread over two years if they declare him a June 1 cut).

Hopkins, who has struggled (relatively) in the last two seasons, will with the right team have a great chance to return to his 2020 form, when he had a franchise-record 115 catches for 1,407 yards and six touchdowns while earning second-team All-Pro honors. … the same sort of great production he gave Houston before the Texans foolishly traded him.

So now Hopkins gets to pick his spot. Earlier this week, Hopkins was asked what he was looking for in a team.

"What I want is stable management upstairs, that's something I haven't really had the past couple years of my career coming from Houston and then to Arizona," Hopkins said. "A QB who loves the game, a QB who brings everybody on board with him, not just himself but everybody around him ... and a great defense. A great defense wins championships."

Remember "Talk to me, Dallas?'' Does that apply here?

Is that Josh Allen and the Bills? Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs? Lamar Jackson and the Ravens? Hopkins didn’t include Dak Prescott on his recent list of favorite QBs … but there is no way that should preclude the Cowboys from putting in a bid on a star who is essentially a $20 million APY … and who is about to be a huge added weapon in the NFL arms race.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones oversees a loaded roster with a bunch of stars due new paydays. But Jones is fond of vowing that he’d “pay anything” to win another Super Bowl.

The availability of DeAndre Hopkins it is now giving him a chance to prove that.
