Cowboys & TE Dalton Schultz? Team Didn't Even Conduct Contract Meeting - Report

Wait. The Cowboys didn't even bother visiting on the subject of Dalton Schultz's contract at all?

FRISCO - The Dallas Cowboys spent the week in Indianapolis allowing the bogus rumor of a "big, big move'' to float into the ether, in the end creating the appearance of proactivity.

But while they did have issues with several free agent issues to sort out, and while the front office will surely be quite busy soon enough ...

*We're told no real progress was made on a deal for free agent Leighton Vander Esch.

*We're told no real progress was made on a deal for free agent Donovan Wilson.

*We're told no real progress was made on talks that would've given a long-term deal to free agent Tony Pollard, thus the Monday application of the franchise tag.

*And now ESPN is reporting that as it regards the team's interest level in tight end Dalton Schultz, yet another free agent who was valued enough a year ago to get the tag ...

The Cowboys didn't even bother visiting on the subject of Schultz at all?

We take this to mean that owner Jerry Jones and his staff never got around to meeting with Schultz' agent, or maybe it was Schultz' agent who is seeing the writing on the wall and opting to not bother.

As Dak Prescott's favorite target over the last few seasons, Schultz had become an important part of the Cowboys' offense. And we recognize why that is about to change.

Speaking from the combine in Indianapolis, Jones seemed to hint that the performance of other players on offense means that the franchise isn't backed into a corner over Schultz's future.

"Tight end, and of course Dalton, is very important," Jones said. "But it's important to remind everyone that we have other players involved here. I think we're fortunate to have the young players that we had last year really step up."

"Very important.'' But not important to be the subject of a negotiating meeting?

So dissecting Jerry's words, he seems to hint that while Schultz was important, he felt it was worth reminding that rookie tight ends in Peyton Hendershot and Jake Ferguson stepped up.

Does this mean it's the end of the line for Schultz in Frisco as Jerry feels Hendershot and Ferguson can take over?

The absence of a meeting would suggest so. And beyond that? The absence of any other real progress surely has Cowboys Nation pondering whether it should give up on making "big, big moves'' as Dallas isn't even close to making "little, little moves.''
