Cowboys WR Michael Gallup: Dallas’ 'Biggest X-Factor?'
The Dallas Cowboys seemingly improved their roster in all facets this offseason by bringing in established veterans such as Brandin Cooks and Stephon Gilmore. Still, the most important player on their team might be a familiar face, wide receiver Michael Gallup.
In 2019, it looked like Gallup would be a great Cowboys receiver for years to come. It was only his second season, yet he established himself as a force, catching 66 passes for six touchdowns and 1,107 yards. Unfortunately, the receiver hasn’t reached the heights his career seemed to have in store since then.
Now the age of 27, 2019, remains his lone season to have eclipsed a thousand yards, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t essential to the success of Dallas this season; look at what a Pro Football Focus writer tweeted.
“[Gallup] might be the biggest X-factor for the Cowboys. If Gallup looks like the 2019 version of himself, Dallas should be elite on offense again. But if he struggles.... they could be in trouble,” the PFF writer tweeted.
Last year Gallup was the Cowboys’ number two receiver behind CeeDee Lamb after signing a five-year contract potentially worth over 57 million dollars. Despite the new contract, Gallup arguably had his worst season, coming off of an ACL tear in 2021; he would have 424 yards on 10.9 yards per reception, both career lows.
This season Gallup will be operating as the team’s third receiving option behind Lamb and Cooks. With easier competition facing him and more time since his ACL injury, the hope is that he’ll regain the form he showed early on in his career and prove to be a mismatch as Dallas pursues its sixth Super Bowl.
