Cowboys Source: Robbie Gould-Level Move 'Not the Plan'; New Kicker Signs

Is local-kid Brandon Aubrey going to be better than not only Tristan Vizcaino, but also better than Robbie Gould, Ryan Succup and Mason Crosby? That's the Cowboys' idea, yes.

FRISCO - It is really the only roster hole the Dallas Cowboys have as they prepare for training camp in Oxnard, and they just filled it - with a "champion'' you've likely never heard of.

An NFL source tells CowboysSI.com that while veteran standouts Robbie Gould, Ryan Succup and Mason Crosby- all accomplished and all free agents - were considered, they were "not the plan'' as Dallas worked to replace Brett Maher, who was good for the Cowboys last year until he missed five PATs in the playoffs.

What was the plan? To look at "anybody on earth,'' as special-teams coordinator "Bones'' Fassel put it - all along meaning maybe somebody from the XFL or USFL ... and that search of "earth'' landed the Cowboys back in Plano, the hometown of Brandon Aubrey, who spent the past two seasons kicking for the Birmingham Stallions of the USFL.

Aubrey, 28, was a soccer star at Plano High School, situated 10 minutes away from Cowboys HQ at The Star in Frisco, and then played at Notre Dame. ... but again, as a soccer standout.

He's an athlete, at 6-3, 200 ... and surely the Cowboys have delved into the positives of his psyche ... because as he gets ready to compete with Tristan Vizcaino for the high-profile, high-pressure job as a kicker, the fact that he's really only been a football player for the last two years cannot be ignored.

Aubrey was selected in the first round of the 2017 MLS draft by Toronto FC. ... and in 2022, was selected by Birmingham ... and the experiment worked. Despite his inexperience, in his first go at professional football he was named an All-USFL kicker. In 2023, he made 14 of 15 field goal attempts and he made all 35 extra points for Birmingham.

Is Aubrey going to be more affordable, contract-wise, than Robbie Gould, Ryan Succup and Mason Crosby? Surely. Is Aubrey going to be better than not only Vizcaino, but also better than Robbie Gould, Ryan Succup and Mason Crosby? That's the idea, yes.
