'I Was Beating My Head Into the Wall!' Cowboys Rookie Brandon Aubrey Reacts to Pro Bowl
Dallas Cowboys rookie kicker Brandon Aubrey has been one of the stories of the year and it has just gotten better - he is now a Pro Bowler.
In his first NFL season, Aubrey has been as automatic as they come for the Cowboys as has hit all 35 of his field goal attempts (which includes nine from 50+ yards) and 44 out of his 48 extra points as he has been a beacon of consistently not seen at the kicker position for Dallas since the days of Dan Bailey.
As such, he, along with six other Cowboys teammates that included Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, Micah Parsons, Bryan Anger, Zack Martin, and DaRon Bland was named to the Pro Bowl.
“I was excited, honored just honored,” Aubrey said. “It's a big, big honor, and obviously couldn't have done it without the guys next to me.”
While Aubrey's journey this season has been one out of a movie, it nearly didn't happen as he was toiling away in the hopes of getting noticed, before finally getting a chance with USFL team the Birmingham Stallions in 2022.
Aubrey - who played soccer first in his hometown of McKinney and then at Notre Dame and then professional in MSL - got the chance in training camp this offseason to fight for the position with Tristan Vizcaino, a battle he would win rather quickly as the Cowboys cut Vizcaino - a decision that now, looks vindicated.
But was there ever a chance where Aubrey thought his NFL chance was never going to come?
Cowboys Land 7 On Pro Bowl Roster
“Early on, going to combine events and workouts," Aubrey said. "Not getting the opportunity, being told you have the talent but you don't have the film, so we can't give you that opportunity, just felt like it was beating my head into the wall until the USFL came into existence and gave me that opportunity."
What's 'Inside Brandon Aubrey's Brain'?
Now, as he looks to continue his good form as the Cowboys face the Washington Commanders on the road with the NFC East and No. 2 seed in the NFC at stake, Aubrey will again be looking to be the consistent kicker he's been all season long.
From being a lesser-known kicker from the USFL to a Pro Bowl kicker just 12 months later, it has been a long journey for Aubrey, and one that was started by the Cowboys giving him an opportunity.
And he hasn't looked back.
