'Got Us A Kicker!' Rookie Takes Over 2-0 Cowboys Scoring
The Dallas Cowboys are elated to have corralled this Birmingham Stallion.
For the time being, the Cowboys' kicking issues appear to be a distant memory despite serving as one of the most enduring memes of the 2022 NFL season thanks to Brandon Aubrey, one of the newest North Texans. The scoring ledgers of Dallas' 30-10 victory over the New York Jets were an exclusive Aubrey affair, consisting entirely of his triples. His most notable boot was a 55-yard strike in the third period that created a 24-10 advantage.
Aubrey's perfect 5-of-5 statline (combined with an extra point after the first of two Dak Prescott touchdown passes) drew the attention of Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.
"I think we’ve got us a kicker,” Jones said. “That’s a far cry from missing that first extra point that we started the season off with, but I’m the kind of guy that will hang in there with them. ... I’m pleased for him, pleased for our team. That’s everything you want for a kicker to experience and still let us have, as a young kicker, a lot of to look forward to.”
Aubrey's season began on a troubling note, as he missed the ensuing extra point following the Cowboys' first touchdown of the season at the onset of a 40-0 shellacking of the New York Giants last weekend. He's been perfect ever since and has posted 26 of Dallas' 70 points scored so far this season. The 13 points per game would've placed him sixth on last year's Dallas Mavericks.
From the get-go, Aubrey carried one of the more intriguing stories among NFL virgins entering the 2023 season. The Notre Dame alum was versed in a different brand of football, the game Americans call soccer, well enough to hear his name called at the 2017 MLS SuperDraft. While Aubrey never played a game with Toronto FC, he found a new calling through the more traditional American football.
Catching on with the rebooted United States Football League's Stallions, Aubrey took home consecutive championships before getting the Cowboy call.
“The football gods have been good to him as far as getting him reloaded chances,” Cowboys special teams boss John Fassel said of Aubrey earlier this month. “He’s capitalized on the reloaded chances, which is why he’s our kicker. I’m very optimistic about his continued ascension and hopefully being a Cowboy for a long time.”
Aubrey and the Cowboys (2-0) return to action next Sunday when they hit the road to face the Arizona Cardinals (3:25 p.m. ET, Fox).
