Cowboys BREAKING: Zack Martin Threatens to Sit Out Camp In Contract Protest
FRISCO - Dallas Cowboys guard Zack Martin has seen it all over his decade in the NFL. But what he wants to see now? A new contract that repairs his status as an elite player who is “woefully underpaid relative to the market.”
Those are the words used by an ESPN source quoting Martin, which comes along with the suggestion that the six-time All-Pro is considering not reporting to training camp due in Oxnard next week.
The report states that "the team’s lack of interest in restructuring'' Martin's contract is an issue. As it stands, Martin is scheduled to make about $13.5 million this year - about $7 mil less than what the top-paid guards (Chris Lindstrom in Atlanta, Quenton Nelson in Indianapolis) make. That number doesn't fully take into consideration that Martin has already pocketed $40 million in cash from his previous extension, the standout having signed a six-year, $84 million deal with the Cowboys in June of 2018.
But Martin can certainly argue that that that was then and this is now, especially as it relates to those top-paid guards. The future Hall of Famer has allowed just nine sacks and 22 quarterback hits over his 137 career games. He just got a 99 rating from Madden, as good as it gets.
Alongside an improved (and hopefully healthy) offensive line of Tyron Smith, Tyler Smith, Terence Steele, and Tyler Biadasz, Dallas is looking to take this unit a step forward in 2023 with Martin leading the charge. But before that concept moves forward? Martin would like a visit with the Joneses - who are juggling contract negotiations as we speak with Dak Prescott and others ... and suddenly now have an even busier week.
