Cowboys 'Close' to Trade for 'Dynamic Weapon' at WR? Not Exactly

The Dallas Cowboys are making big promises in their search for a star wide receiver ... but are they playing a game of "Dynamic Weapon Bait-and-Switch''?

FRISCO - Are the Dallas Cowboys playing a game of "Dynamic Weapon Bait-and-Switch''?

In one breath, "America's Team'' is announcing (via a Dallas News story) that "another dynamic weapon will be added.''

That's not a quote from the Cowboys; that's a black-and-white statement made by the newspaper, a bold thing to assert in a news story unless there is a mountain of evidence to justify it.

We assume there is that ... somewhere.

We do know that COO Stephen Jones is on record as all but vowing to "add a playmaker with juice'' to the Dallas offense in order to strengthen quarterback Dak Prescott’s arsenal.

But amid all the promises, and alongside the media assertion that Dallas is "working on a big, big deal'' - catnip to an excited Cowboys Nation ...

Comes the next breath, the paper reporting (obviously via a Cowboys front-office source) that while the Cowboys are ...

1) "Actively pursuing a difference-making playmaker'' ...

It is also the case that ...

2) "If the Cowboys are to acquire a veteran wide receiver via trade, they are not close to doing so. No such trade is actively developing, a person familiar with the situation said Thursday.''

Can both of those things be accurate? Dallas is "actively pursuing'' but nothing is "actively developing''?

That's a lot of "active'' without any actual "active.''

We have written about the Texans' willingness to shop Brandin Cooks, and the rumors regarding DeAndre Hopkins and other star receivers continue. We have scoffed at the idea of the Bills giving into brother Trevon's desires and moving Stefon Diggs to Dallas.

In theory, Dallas could be "actively pursuing'' a trade, except for one problem: We are still 10 days away from the start of the NFL business year, and at this point, the Cowboys remain $7 million over the cap.

Much shuffling is to be done before Dallas can take on any major salary. So maybe "active'' means the Cowboys are "actively'' thinking about it.

The News adds that "nothing is imminent with Odell Beckham Jr.,'' even though he is a free agent and is eligible to be signed right now, no waiting, no juggling, no other team involved.

And yet ... "nothing imminent.''

We joke in this space about "the Cowboys being a marketing company that sometimes plays football,'' and we know how much Cowboys Nation wants us to be wrong. But the "promise'' of a "dynamic weapon'' has done nothing but lure curious fans into the circus tent.

We await to see what show the Cowboys plan to stage for the center ring.
