Cowboys Trade for Trevon Brother Stefon Diggs of Bills? Why's This Rumor Gaining Steam?

It appears as if per the NFL rules, Trevon Diggs is technically tampering with his older brother by publicly asking for Stefon to be traded to the Cowboys while he's under contract in Buffalo.

FRISCO - Are the trade suggestions from Dallas Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs toward his brother and Buffalo Bills receiver Stefon Diggs simply family members being playful?

Or is it tampering?

That's the part that should be taken seriously here - if anything is.

And yet ... national news outlets are taking Trevon's fun and doing "deep dives'' into the salary-cap ramifications of a trade ... that is not really being discussed.

PFT is here to tell us the following:

"Some have wondered if his cryptic tweets and social media posts are a clue that he wants to be traded out of Buffalo. ... If Diggs is unhappy and wants out of western New York, it would be a costly move for the Bills both on and off the field. In addition to losing Diggs' production as a Pro Bowl receiver, a trade would cost Buffalo nearly $35 million against the cap.''

We haven't spent much time wondering about the tweets. (Hey, we could be wrong, giving Stefon's history on Twitter.) We are aware of the cap issue.

Which is why we haven't taken the idea of a trade seriously.

Meanwhile ... In Buffalo, there are grumbles not about an actual trade, but about all of this being tampering.

First came this ...

“We need Cowboys Nation to go and help and tweet to get bro here,” Trevon told "Blogging the Boys'' recently. “We need everyone to know. We need to put it on notice that we need to get bro to Dallas.”

And now?

Trevon took it a step beyond by posting a jersey swap of Stefon in Cowboys gear.

So it triggers the question ... could Trevon be violating the NFL's tampering rules?

Well, according to Rule B of Section 3 of the NFL's Anti-Tampering Policy, "no club, nor any person employed by or otherwise affiliated with a club, is permitted to tamper with a player who is under contract to or whose exclusive negotiating rights are held by another club."

So maybe Trevon is technically tampering with his older brother by publicly asking for Stefon to be traded while he's under contract in Buffalo.

It’s never seemed like a realistic ask; Stefon signed a four-year, $96 million extension with the Bills just last fall, and maybe that’s evidence that Trevon is just being playful.

It's natural for the brothers to wish to team up. It’s also fun to hear Stefon say, “I grew up a Cowboys fan and I follow the Cowboys because of my brother and all that.''

But maybe Trevon’s point has been made. Cowboys management is surely aware. And with all due respect to the power of Cowboys Nation, a Twitter campaign seems unlikely to impact the teams’ decisions.

So, rules being rules, maybe it’s best to let this one rest. And rumors being rumors ... we come to the same conclusion.
