Cowboys Ex Connor McGovern Slams Coaching Staff

Former Dallas Cowboys guard Connor McGovern, now with the Buffalo Bills, reveals he prefers his new team's coaching style over his old one's

The Dallas Cowboys lost a major piece of their offensive line this offseason with the departure of Connor McGovern.

McGovern, 25, started 15 games for the Cowboys last season, mostly at left guard but occasionally at right guard and center as well. On the first day free agency, though, he left the Cowboys to sign a three-year deal worth over $22 million with the Buffalo Bills. With McGovern now gone, the Cowboys now must fill the hole he leaves up front.

Apparently, it didn't take McGovern long to put his former team behind him. In an interview with the Buffalo News, McGovern had some less-than-glowing remarks for the Cowboys' coaching staff, at least in comparison to the Bills'.

“Yes, complete 180 (degrees from Dallas),” McGovern said. “But it’s been the best (coaching) I’ve had in my career from college all the way up. (Kromer) gets into the small, little details, and I’ve never really had somebody pick things apart.”

Later on, McGovern cleared up his comments by noting the difference in style between the Bills' and Cowboys' coaching philosophy, preferring the former's more active style.

“It’s not, ‘Hey, just block your guy,’” McGovern said. “It’s, ‘Get your punch (block) up a couple inches to the V-neck of the jersey.’ Just those little things.

“In my four years in Dallas, I maybe jump-set four times – I do that four times here in one (practice), period. Now, instead of sitting back and waiting and waiting and waiting (for the defender), I go after them.”

For all of McGovern's criticism, he enjoyed a solid career with the Cowboys. He started 29 of the 45 games he played, moving all around the interior offensive line. At the very least, he played well enough to earn a good payday from the Bills.

“We liked what Connor displayed in Dallas,” Bills offensive line coach Aaron Kromer said. “He has the versatility to play three inside spots, and then (also) his size and athleticism drew us to him.”

Despite McGovern's departure, the Cowboys seem to have adapted well with lineman such as 2022 first-round pick Tyler Smith stepping up.
