FRISCO -Our interpretation of Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy’s “scoreboard” remarks regarding his now-former offensive coordinator Kellen Moore did not register with us as incendiary of even controversial.

We are, we recognize, in the minority.

"Can you believe they did Kellen Moore like that? ... I can't believe Mike McCarthy took a shot at this man right here," Shannon Sharpe said on TV’s “Undisputed.” “Mike McCarthy is full of ishh.”

What did McCarthy say that has America’s panties in a wad? Moore, his former boss said, wanted to "light up the scoreboard" while he, going forward, will want to "run the damn ball" and get his defense some rest.

But let’s look at McCarthy's more expansive comments:

“I’ve been where Kellen’s been. Kellen wants to light the scoreboard up, but I want him to run the damn ball so I can rest my defense. I think when you’re a coordinator, you know but you’re in charge of the offense. Being a head coach and being a play-caller, you’re a little more in tune with (everything).

“I don’t desire to be the No. 1 offense in the league. I want to be the No. 1 team in the league with the number of wins and a championship. And if we’ve got to give up some production and take care of the ball a little better to get that, then that’s what we’ll do because we have a really good defense.”

McCarthy added that he thinks Moore “did an excellent job.”

Now, we see there were differences in offensive philosophy. Is there more?

The Cowboys’ coach believes his installation of his West Coast Offense, along with him serving as his own play-caller, will advance the cause of Dak Prescott … and as Dak led the league in interceptions despite playing in just 12 contests, maybe some “advancement” is merited.

But is “ripping Moore” - who is now offensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Chargers - merited?

We say no. But we also say, maybe naively, that we’re really not sure that was McCarthy’s intention here.
