'The First Time!' Cowboys QB Dak Prescott Speaks Out on New 'Texas Coast Offense'

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is excited for the year ahead after making some tweaks to the offensive system under head coach and now play-caller Mike McCarthy.

The Dallas Cowboys under coach Mike McCarthy have been steadily building toward the ultimate goal of winning a Super Bowl. Since taking over from Jason Garrett in 2020, McCarthy has overseen a transformation that now, Cowboys Nation hopes, has Dallas positioned for sustained success and deep playoff runs.

With coordinator Kellen Moore having "moved on" at season's end, McCarthy has taken over play-calling duties and, as such, has made tweaks to the system to benefit quarterback Dak Prescott.

Named the "Texas Coast Offense" by Dak and the QB room, the new attack has McCarthy implementing some of his "West Coast Offense'' concepts in Dallas. With back-to-back 12-win seasons, the Cowboys have been building nicely, and Prescott is looking forward to rolling out the new system this season.

“You’re able to take two 12-win seasons over into this one and build," Prescott on 96.7 The Ticket, via Jon Machota of the Athletic. "It’s the first time in my career I can say I feel like consecutive seasons are building. Going back to 2021, we’ve been able to build. We built that year, and we can build again. I think that’s the best real chance that you have of making it.''

"You got to give it knocks,'' continued Dak. "You’ve got to see what it feels like. Us having that now, you feel a lot more comfortable, you’re excited about the details, the changes that we’ve had on the offense and just the team. I’m looking forward to it with a lot of excitement.”

Building off back-to-back 12 wins seasons, something the franchise hasn't done since the 1994 and 1995 seasons, is challenging. But the Cowboys have made moves for veteran cornerback Stephon Gilmore and receiver Brandin Cooks on team-friendly deals to help solidify and build on what Dallas accomplished last season.

For Prescott, it has been an offseason of learning as he comes off a league-leading interception total of 15. Much has been made of those turnovers. Some were on Dak, others weren't, with he and McCarthy having sat down and gone through each one.

With McCarthy now the play-caller, there is a distinct want to ease the burden on Prescott going forward. Part of McCarthy's offensive system is based on short, crisp, horizontal throws to allow his skill position players to do their work in open space.

With a new "Big 3" in CeeDee Lamb, Cooks, and Michael Gallup, coupled with Tony Pollard as the lead back and the tight end group labeled the "Four Horsemen," it's easy to see why Dak is confident about what can be achieved.

The team has been building toward something for two years and has 24 wins to show for it, but that next step is the most daunting...breaking the over 10,000-day-old NFC Championship drought.

With McCarthy ironing out the small details on offense and with Prescott perhaps being in the best mental and physical space in some time, it is no wonder Dak has a positive outlook for the season ahead. Now, starting with training camp at the end of July ... It just has to translate to on-field success.
