'I Care!' Cowboys QB Dak Prescott Reveals What Leadership Means to Him
As the signal-caller for America’s Team, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott isn’t exactly the leader of the free world, but his responsibilities feel pretty close.
Prescott, 30, is entering year eight as a Cowboy, and the pressure to bring home a Lombardi Trophy is mounting. The national media has attacked his play, contract, and leadership, but it is clear he has the respect of the only people that matter—his teammates. Prescott spoke on Tuesday about his priorities as a team leader.
“It just means bringing people along,” he started. “Making sure that you’re trying to get the best out of other people and making other people feel comfortable.”
Prescott threw for 2,860 yards and 23 touchdowns in 12 games last season. His league-leading 15 interceptions were an ugly blemish on his record, but the Cowboys are hopeful that improvements at receiver and on early downs can put him in favorable situations.
The turnovers may have forced him to fall out of favor with some fans, but his attitude off the field has earned him a well-deserved sense of loyalty.
“I hang my hat on the saying people don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care,” Prescott continued. “That’s generally who I am. I care about people, I care about seeing people succeed, I care about seeing people happy.
“And for me it’s just about trying to create that type of environment for everybody … when you can do that and make people comfortable and encourage them, a lot of success comes for everyone.”
Success for Dallas this season likely looks like a trip to the conference round, if not a flight to Super Bowl LVIII. With a projected top defense and a star quarterback to rally around, the Cowboys are expecting that aforementioned success to come to fruition in 2023.
Their journey starts in enemy territory against the New York Giants on Sep. 10.
