DeMarcus Ware Worried About Tony Pollard; Cowboys Need Trade For 'Home-Run Hitter’
DeMarcus Ware is going into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. And, maybe eventually, also heading into the business of being a NFL general manager?
With the Dallas Cowboys seemingly void of glaring roster holes and set to pick 26th overall in Thursday's NFL Draft, analysts are struggling to pinpoint their plans. Pick a mock draft and you can find them selecting a variety of positions and players including Texas running back Bijan Robinson, Boston College receiver Zay Flowers and Georgia tight end Darnell Washington.
When the Cowboys drafted Ware 11th overall in 2005 from tiny Troy State, it certainly paid off. Turned into a hybrid defensive end/linebacker/edge rusher by then-coach Bill Parcells, he went on to finish his nine-year career as Dallas' all-time leader in sacks and made four All-Pro teams before winning a Super Bowl with the Denver Broncos.
As he prepares for enshrinement into Canton, Ware is now also projecting what his former team should do in the draft. Unlike most mocks, he thinks the Cowboys should be ultra-aggressive.
"I would trade up," Ware said on 105.3 The Fan this week while playing in a celebrity golf tournament in Las Colinas. "I got what I need on defense. You're gonna get a couple guys in the draft, but I gotta go get a home-run hitter."
Ware doesn't have a particular player the Cowboys should target for their move up the draft, but he does know the position.
"There's not going to be a tight end. to be honest with you," he said. "I feel like it needs to be like a running back. Like somebody that's real solid. I'm talking about a bruiser. I understand that Tony Pollard is great, but I don't know how he's gonna come back."
Sounds like Ware wants somebody like, oh, we dunno ... Ezekiel Elliott?
