Dak & Deuce: Cowboys Rookie Vaughn Can 'Help Immediately,' Prescott Predicts

Dak Prescott administered an equal dose of pressure and potential upon one of the Dallas Cowboys' latter draft picks, running back Deuce Vaughn.

Dak Prescott got his chance to immediately shine for the Dallas Cowboys when a franchise staple ahead of him went down. Seven years later, Prescott is feeling "Deja Deuce.''

Appearing on KTCK-AM's this week, Prescott lauded a fellow Saturday draft arrival in running back Deuce Vaughn, who joined Dallas as a sixth-round pick out of Kansas State earlier this spring. Chosen in the fourth round of the 2016 proceedings, Prescott sees immediate potential from Vaughn.

"That was one that you do get excited about when you see that story," Prescott said. "I think he’s going to be a very talented player who can help us immediately.”

Whereas Prescott took over for the injured, and later retired, Tony Romo, Vaughn is a candidate to replace the production that the released Ezekiel Elliott struggled to maintain after the fruitful early stages of his career. Vaughn will compete for the right to serve as the top spell option to Tony Pollard in training camp against familiar names like Malik Davis and Rico Dowdle, as well as Super Bowl champion Ronald Jones.

The former Wildcat created one of the more special stories of the draft's final day: Vaughn received a unique welcome to the pros when his father Chris, the Cowboys assistant director of college scouting, personally called him to let him know that he'd be wearing a star on his first NFL helmet. Clips of the emotional moment in the Dallas war room went viral shortly after.

Prescott hopes that football expertise and smarts run through the Vaughn bloodline.

"Understanding going into it knowing who he was, knowing his dad, thinking how cool that would be if you could make that happen, I did pay attention enough that he was there in the (sixth) round or something, (asking) how is he still there?" Prescott said. "Seeing that reaction, just knowing how great of a guy Chris is. ... I’m excited about Deuce being in there."

Though thrust down the draft board due to concerns about his 5-foot-6, 176-pound frame, Vaughn certainly takes a promising resume with him into Cowboys camp: he left Manhattan as the second-leading rusher in KSU history and earned unanimous All-American honors in his final collegiate season.

Vaughn has been picking the brain of former NFL running back Darren Sproles, another diminutive KSU product.

"I got to meet Darren my sophomore year at Kansas State, and he's been someone that's been in my corner ever since," Vaughn said. "Any time I can be in the same sentence as a guy like Darren Sproles, a guy that played 15 years in this league, top five in all-purpose yards in this league at my size, that's something I take seriously every single day. I've been trying to pick his brain ... about what I can do to give myself an edge."

And as far as Dak Prescott is concerned? Deuce Vaughn is going about gaining that edge with a shot at making the Cowboys 53-man roster.
