Cowboys' Dez Bryant Jokes Patriots Coach 'Bill Belichick Robbed Me of Super Bowls!'
Since leaving the NFL in 2020, former Dallas Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant has been very vocal on social media.
Whether it's commenting on his old team, "reporting" on stories or sharing tidbits about his career, the former Cowboy has not been shy about sharing his opinions. Bryant took to Twitter again on Saturday to comment on another issue, this time about the New England Patriots and boss Bill Belichick.
A fan tweeted at Bryant calling him "one of his favorite college receivers ever." However, this fan also claims to be a "die-hard" supporter of the Philadelphia Eagles, and wished Bryant would've gone somewhere other than Dallas. Bryant then responded to this tweet in a curious way, saying "Bill Belichick robbed me from some Super Bowls" with a laughing emoji.
This may seem confusing at first, so what exactly does Bryant mean by this? Well, it seems like he is referring back to the 2010 NFL Draft, when he first entered the league.Â
The Cowboys selected Bryant with the No. 24 overall pick in the draft, but that pick didn't always belong to them. The pick originally belonged to Philadelphia, which traded it to the Denver Broncos, who then traded it to New England. Dallas then traded up with New England on draft night to nab the pick and select Bryant, preventing him from becoming a Patriot. Although not completely certain, it's likely that this is what Bryant is referring to in his tweet.Â
If Bryant had wound up in New England, he likely would've won a championship in his career. From 2010 to 2020, when Bryant last played in the NFL, the Patriots won three Super Bowls and appeared in two others in the latter half of the Belichick-Tom Brady dynasty. With Bryant potentially becoming Brady's favorite target, the Patriots may have won even more if they had the star receiver.
That said, Bryant still enjoyed a remarkable career in Dallas. In eight seasons with the Cowboys, he caught 531 passes for 7,459 yards and 73 touchdowns. If injuries hadn't taken their toll, perhaps Bryant could've been an elite receiver even longer. He also had very brief stints with the New Orleans Saints in 2018 and Baltimore Ravens in 2020 before walking away.
How might have Bryant's career gone if he had gone to New England instead of Dallas? We'll never know for sure, but it's certainly fun to think about.Â
