Former Dallas Cowboys defensive back Byron Jones left the Dallas Cowboys in 2020 rather inconspicuously.

After five seasons with America's Team, Jones left in free agency, taking a five-year, $82.5 million deal with the Dolphins, making him, at the time, the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history.

But Jones played just two seasons in Miami, sitting out all of 2022 due to an injury.

And now it appears he won't return to the Dolphins in 2023 either.

ESPN reports Miami will release Jones after the start of the new league year on March 15 and will be designated as a post-June 1 cut. That will allow the Dolphins to save $13.6 million in salary cap savings for next season.

Jones went public recently about the toll professional football has taken on his body, tweeting that he "can't run or jump" due to injuries, including the Achilles and ankle that kept him out of action last season.

With his current injury situation, it's unlikely Jones will collect much attention on the free agent market. If no team shows interest in Jones then this could mark the end of his eight-year career.

Jones, 30, was selected by Dallas in the 2015 NFL Draft, taken No. 27 overall out of Connecticut. In five seasons with the Cowboys, Jones registered 349 tackles splitting time between free safety and cornerback.

Jones also collected two forced fumbles and two interceptions, including a pick-6 for the Cowboys in 2017. He will certainly go down in Dallas as a guy who was a fine player and a class act ... but he may now also be going down as a guy who "can't run or jump.''
