Broncos Would Trade Courtland Sutton for 'Decent Offer'; Cowboys WR Answer?

Desperate for aerial production beyond CeeDee Lamb, the Dallas Cowboys could trade for Denver Broncos receiver Courtland Sutton if he's put on the market.

Courtland Sutton has been a Denver Bronco. Maybe it's time to make him a Dallas Cowboy.

With North Texas fans well-used to Sutton repping their equine-based squads ... previously starring at SMU ... a reunion could occur, according to a report from NBC's Matthew Berry. The latter's intel from the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis declares that Denver is "quietly shopping" Sutton to the point where they're "not actively pushing him" but would pull the trigger on a "decent offer."

Pro Football Network found Dallas to be a prime candidate for Sutton's services if a deal indeed goes down. While Sutton has struggled to recapture the production of his brilliant sophomore season in 2019 (1,112 yards and six scores), his services would've been highly appreciated in Dallas last season, as the Cowboys failed to replace the firepower lost in Amari Cooper's departure. Despite Denver's struggles at quarterback, Sutton inched back toward his Pro Bowl form with 829 on 64 receptions over 15 appearances.

"We all know Jerry Jones likes to make splashes, and though a swing for Sutton wouldn’t be a massive cannonball, it’ll certainly make enough waves to get Cowboys fans more enthused about the state of the pass-catching corps," PFN writes. "Tony Pollard and CeeDee Lamb did the majority of the heavy lifting, and more support is needed on the outside."

We will disagree with PFN's assertion that "Jerry makes splashes''; that habit is more than a decade old. But the Cowboys are on record this offseason as wanting to an an offensive "play-maker with juice.''

Sutton - under contract for three more years with an annual cap hit averaging about $17 million - could be that.

Lamb broke out as a reliable top option but assistance was hard to come by thanks to a combination of injuries (Michael Gallup) and inconsistency (Jalen Tolbert failing to get into the regular rotation). Things deteriorated to the point where Dallas needed to bring in former Indianapolis Pro Bowler T.Y. Hilton late in the year, but the road gets no smoother: the top two receivers behind Lamb, Dalton Schultz and Noah Brown, are set to hit the free agency market.

Of course, whether Sutton is dealt or not remains to be seen: Denver, armed with the services of the newly-hired Sean Payton, appears confident that they can salvage the Russell Wilson era and would no doubt be more comfortable with two strong, homegrown receivers like Sutton and Jerry Jeudy to help him rediscover his elite form.

But do remember that the Cowboys made a trade bid on Jeudy at last October's trade deadline. And do expect Dallas to at least continue to monitor the Denver situation as the Cowboys seek ways to improve their offense.
