'Protect Prescott!' Packers Ex Reveals How Cowboys Mike McCarthy Will Boost Dak
Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy moving into the play-calling chair still has some skeptics. ... though given his track record, we're not sure why. But yes ... Many still have huge doubts over whether McCarthy can still call plays to the level that is needed if the Cowboys are to break their NFC Championship hoodoo.
But he's done this before. ... which is why former Green Bay Packers receiver James Jones thinks he knows exactly what will do down this season.
Having been a part of the Packers for eight years with McCarthy (seven of which were with McCarthy as the play-caller), Jones detailed how McCarthy calling the plays will benefit Dak Prescott while also taking a little shot at Moore.
“If Dak Prescott is struggling, maybe going through a slump to where he’s turning the football over, you know what we going to do? We aren’t going to take these shots down the field; we’re getting the ball out of your hands faster, quick decisions," Jones said on FS1's Speak. "I am going to protect you in the way I call the play. Kellen Moore did not protect Dak Prescott when Dak Prescott was struggling.”
“Coach Mike will help him calling the plays, and you will see a much better Dak Prescott this season.”
Jones adds that Moore was "stuck in his ways" calling plays last season and that it hindered Prescott, who even when struggling was pushed ahead by Kellen and his ideology of offense.
“Kellen Moore was so caught up in his own ways that, 'This is how I’m calling the game,” Jones said. “No matter how the game goes, this is how I’m calling the game. This is what I got written up on third down, that’s what I’m running on third down, I don’t care if the quarterback is struggling, I don’t care if we are running the ball well, this is what I’m calling on third down.' Coach Mike will help Dak in that area.”
Now with McCarthy at the helm, who, for many, has a better "game sense" when it comes to calling plays - something that logically makes sense when a play-caller is also the head coach - he will in theory help Prescott navigate the games differently and potentially easier than in previous years.
After so much questioning of if "Big Mike" is the right person to be in Dak's ear, we have now heard from a former McCarthy player who insists that this move will be beneficial to Prescott. And for now? That's good enough for us.
