Cowboys Rank No. 1! (In Superstitious Fans)

It may not be working if their recent trophy case is any indication, but Dallas Cowboys fans bring a whole new level of superstition to the table.

It may not be the "Super" title they're looking for, but the Dallas Cowboys lead North American sports in one unique metric.

A recent study from Casino.org called upon supporters of five major North American professional sports leagues (NFL, MLB, MLS, NBA, NHL) to find the most superstitious fanbase among their ranks as well as their preferred rituals The Cowboys shared the top spot with the NBA's Los Angeles Lakers, outpacing the Green Bay Packers, Pittsburgh Steelers, New York Yankees, and Chicago Bears to round out the top five.

The study, involving over 3,000 respondents from the United States and Canada with an average age of just under 38, noted that Cowboys and Lakers fans are perhaps inspired by the pregame rituals of their athletic heroes.

Whereas Laker fans eagerly await LeBron James' "chalk toss" before tip-off, Dallas supporters helped turn quarterback Dak Prescott into a bit of a dance craze in 2019. NBC cameras caught him engaging in his warmup routine, involving a move indirectly referred to as a "hip whip" by analyst Cris Collinsworth.

Cowboys fans with two left feet need not worry: the study found that the most common form of superstition among the sports-loving multitudes was wearing a certain color on game day, with 44.4 percent of the polled admitting to such a strategy. Other common traditions include lucky clothing (16.8 percent) or watching the game in a specific location (8.6). Tradition borderline on the bizarre the deeper the list goes on, such as "leaving underwear unwashed" or "sleeping in the opponent's uniform."

Alas for Cowboys fans and their ilk among the believers, it appears that their traditions aren't working: among the top five, only one of the teams (the Lakers in 2020) has earned their league's most valuable hardware in the past decade while three of the top six (Packers, Steelers, Bears) missed the most recent postseason entirely.

Nonetheless, Cowboys fans will more than likely have their lucky charms ready when the team kicks off its season on Sept. 10 against the New York Giants.
