NFL Mock Draft: Cowboys Select Dalton Schultz Replacement
The Dallas Cowboys are in a unique position heading into the NFL Draft. After a free agency period that was as good as it could have been, they have few holes in the roster.
That means Dallas has the luxury of picking the best player available, and in CBS Sports' latest mock draft the Cowboys are adding another tight end in Luke Musgrave from Oregon State.
With Dalton Schultz now a member of the Houston Texans, the tight-end position consists of Peyton Hendershot, Jake Ferguson and Sean McKeon. Hendershot and Ferguson are shaping up as future TE1 for Mike McCarthy's West Coast offense, so do they need the addition of Musgrave?
His stats during his four years with Oregon State don't make for great reading, as he missed most of last season due to a knee injury. And a career 633 yards and two touchdowns on 47 receptions don't instill confidence.
But ... he has shown enough to suggest that he will be a big problem to deal with in the NFL.
His athleticism will separate him from others in Dallas' tight-end group. Thought to be a ready-made pass-catching option in any NFL offense from day one, Musgrave could be a good option for Dak Prescott.
His ability to get vertical and make tough catches liken him to Schultz, and in McCarthy's west coast offense, where RAC (run after the catch) is so critical, that is where Musgrave could thrive.
He can be a good option for the Cowboys down the seam, where we saw Schultz do some nice work last season. And with CeeDee Lamb and Brandin Cooks out wide, there could be space for Musgrave to develop into Dak's favorite weapon.
With Hendershot and Ferguson already on the roster, adding Musgrave could theoretically give Dallas a trio of tight ends, each with their specific strengths to bring to what could be a dynamic offense.
