NFC East: Cowboys vs. Eagles 'Taking Turns' in 2-Team Race?
Winning in the NFL is hard enough, but maintaining that success for multiple years seems nearly impossible.
Just looking at the NFC East in recent years, the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles have won six of the last division titles - Washington Commanders (2020) the only exception - with neither one in consecutive years over that span.
So could history repeat itself and find a new divisional winner following Philadelphia's 14-3 campaign a season ago? ESPN agrees with what CowboysSI.com has been preaching all offseason as it believes Dallas is the biggest threat to dethrone the reigning conference champions.
"The gap might not have been widened much this offseason despite the Eagles' addition of more Georgia defenders in Jalen Carter and Nolan Smith in the first round," ESPN writes. "The Cowboys lost to the Eagles in Philly last season with Cooper Rush at quarterback and beat them at AT&T Stadium upon Dak Prescott's return. The Eagles are the favorites, but the Cowboys are right there with them."
Despite quarterback Dak Prescott playing arguably his worst season as a professional and missing five games, the Cowboys finished just a game back of the Eagles in the NFL's best division in 2022.
Now with head coach Mike McCarthy taking over play-calling duties, along with the additions of cornerback Stephon Gilmore and receiver Brandin Cooks, Dallas adds to its already elite core. In fact, we've pointed out that while Dallas has added to its roster, the Eagles - while seemingly still "loaded'' - have lost eight starters from last year's Super Bowl team.
As we've reported from inside The Star, the Cowboys are using components from McCarthy's West Coast Offense in what Dak Prescott and the QBs are calling the "Texas Coast Offense.'' The Cowboys already boasted an offense and a defense that both ranks near the top of the NFL, so there is reason for Cowboys Nation to believe that the pendulum in the NFC East is about to swing again ... and that it's Dallas' "turn.''
