Cowboys 'Elite' QB Dak Prescott 'Will Be MVP Candidate!' - Mike Fisher
For some, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is entering a defining year in his career. Coming off yet another sour playoff exit, many have doubts about Prescott's ability to lead Dallas to Super Bowl glory.
But ... with head coach Mike McCarthy taking over the play-calling duties and an offense that has added veteran Brandin Cooks, the Prescott-led offense has some serious juice.
Many doubt Prescott after his league-leading interception total of 15 last season, but with all the offensive changes happening at The Star this offseason, Dak looks like a dark horse MVP candidate according to a respected local voice and a respected national voice.
First to our own Mike Fisher of CowboysSI.com (sporting his "Texas Coast Offense'' shirt!), who’s covered the Cowboys for 33 years and the NFL for 40.
“A simple look at Prescott’s body of work tells you that the 15 interceptions - no matter who’s ‘fault’ they were - is an outlier,” Fish says. “This idea that ‘interceptions are in his DNA’ is moronic.
“What’s in Prescott’s DNA is this: Before last season he averaged eight interceptions per year; include last season and the number ‘jumps all the way up’ to nine!
“Before last year, his TD-to-INT number was 143 to 50 … a ratio that is considered ‘elite.’ In full seasons he’s generally in the range of 4,000 yards passing.
“In terms of character and leadership, he’s off the charts. And his lifetime record is 61-36. If Dallas wins twice as many games as it loses for a third straight year - and the Cowboys are on track to accomplish something in that range - Dak will be an MVP candidate. There’s nothing controversial or even debatable about it.”
And now the national expert, Adam Schein of NFL.com.
“I think Prescott is in line for his finest season yet," Schein writes. "In McCarthy's 12 years as Green Bay's play-caller, the Packers finished as a top-five scoring offense seven times. The man knows what he's doing with a playbook.
“I think he sizzles all year long. Supported by a ferocious, Micah Parson-led defense, Prescott should have the 2023 Cowboys squarely in the Super Bowl conversation. And if you're the reason why "America's Team" is a top-notch title contender, well, you're a top-notch MVP candidate.”
NFL analyst Emmanuel Acho predicts that Dak will throw for 5,000 yards and 40 touchdowns next season. That might seem a bit much, but Dak has gotten close to both before. If Prescott gets near those numbers again, we're with Fish - Dak will be right in the thick of the MVP race.
