Cowboys QB Dak Prescott Reveals 'Amazing Changes' In Dallas Direction
Since entering the NFL, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott has had continuity in both personnel and coaching groups, but that all changed this offseason.
Ezekiel Elliott, Prescott's close friend, was released by Dallas. Several coaches, including offensive coordinator Kellen Moore who has been with Dak since being drafted as a player and coach, were moved on. Head coach Mike McCarthy is now the team's offensive play-caller, and Brian Schottenheimer is the offensive coordinator.
All the changes were challenging for Prescott, who spoke at a Children's Cancer Fund "Light It Up" Gala in Dallas, but it has left him in a positive space.
"It was tough going in Day 1," Prescott said. "Not just because of Zeke, but a bunch of coaching changes. ... It was interesting. 'How's this going to feel? What's this going to be like?' When I left, it was amazing, honestly. It was change, but it was a sense of positive change and excitement for me."
With McCarthy taking over as the offensive play-caller, something he has previously done in Green Bay, the Cowboys are expected to incorporate his West Coast offense into the current scheme.
Likely aimed at reducing the load on Dak's shoulders, McCarthy's system will allow his quarterback to manage the game, distribute the ball to his playmakers and let them do their work in open space.
With the changes in personnel both on and off the field, Dak, who we know is a positive influence on the Dallas locker room, went into the first day of the offseason program in a good frame of mind, and he is looking forward to what this new group can achieve.
"I'm an optimistic guy and always have been – you guys know that," Prescott said. "I guess going into there, I couldn't tell if the glass was half-full or half-empty. And then I leave, it was definitely half-full. I'm excited about the direction we're going."
The direction Dallas is heading is toward an NFC Championship appearance. With most defensive pieces returning and the addition of Stephon Gilmore, Dan Quinn's unit looks to be improved.
Couple that with Brandin Cooks coming to The Star and the potential to add another weapon on offense via the NFL Draft, it is no wonder Prescott is confident in this team.
Change can sometimes be scary, but this feels like a good change for the Cowboys, and while a single down hasn't been played yet, the feeling of optimism is flowing through The Star, with Prescott at the center of it.
