Dallas Cowboys 'Wild' Secret Weapon - An NFL-Record Kick - Unleashed at San Francisco 49ers?
Dallas Cowboys kicker Brandon Aubrey has dynamite in his right leg. The former MLS and USFL star has been a revelation this season after "winning" the job during training camp after Tristan Vizcaino was released.
The one position on the Cowboys roster that was causing the most hesitancy entering the season was kicker, but after Aubrey's early mishap against the New York Giants in Week 1 (a missed PAT), he has been automatic. ... and he's done it from deep.
Such is the Cowboys coaching staff's confidence in him, Aubrey was sent to try a 66-yard field goal on Sunday against the New England Patriots before a false start penalty ended the hope of tying the NFL record, which is held by Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker.
Special-teams coordinator John Fassel hasn't seen Aubrey make a 66-yard kick, but ...
“No, I have not (seen it), but I know he can,” Fassel said. “We talked about something that’s pretty wild, which I can’t share right now. He’s got it in him. Man, I would have loved to have seen that. Gosh, I was hoping to see that kick."
Hmm, there is a bit to dissect here. Something "pretty wild"? Could we see something against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday night that we haven't seen before?
Fassel seemed confident ... but wait, there's more. "Bones" would go on to say something a bit outlandish ...
“We talked about something this morning that if we’re in that situation again and we need it from 68 [yards], how do we get it? I think there’s a way he can do it, and we’re going to work on it," Fassell said.”
Stop the presses: Fassell is talking about a 68-yard field goal and is confident Aubrey can make it.
With the Cowboys looking for any advantage against the Niners, could we be about to see their "secret weapon" in Aubrey's booming right leg play an odd yet important role? After all, he is 13 of 13 on his field goals, with his longest being an easily made 55-yarder
After going through the madness of Brett Maher'd yips in the playoffs last season to now having a reliable kicker in Aubrey, that could be just the thing to tip the scales in Dallas' favor on Sunday night. And a potentially history-making 68-yard field goal being made certainly won't be on many people's bingo card in Santa Clara.
