Cowboys BREAKING: Trevon Diggs Signs New Contract: 'I Love it Here!'
OXNARD - If you've been wondering if Dallas Cowboys boss Jerry Jones is really ready to commit that big money and write that big check to secure the future of "America's Team's'' fine roster?
Your wondering is over, as on Tuesday - with camp opening here in Oxnard - COO Stephen Jones has successfully worked as the point man to a new deal for cornerback Trevon Diggs ... a five-year extension worth a reported $97 million.
Jones recently told us that contract extensions for receiver CeeDee Lamb and cornerback Diggs are “on the radar.” And now that we've got a done deal, maybe the "cap boy'' silliness can be tabled.
The Cowboys have turned with intensity their attention to getting serious about long-term deals for their young stars. Lamb and Diggs are in a sense in two different categories, Dallas exercised the fifth-year option on Lamb’s contract for 2024 - a tool that can be used to secure another season out of former first-round pick.
That left Diggs - as a former second-rounder with no such option - arguably a more front-burner negotiation. Diggs was heading into the final year of his rookie deal due to make $4.843 million … with a gargantuan payday in his future.
“Hopefully something gets figured out,” Diggs said recently. “I love Dallas. I love being here. We’ll see.”
It got figured out for Diggs, who had three interceptions and 14 pass breakups in 2022 in earning Pro Bowl honors for a second time. He led the league with 11 interceptions and two return touchdowns in 2021 in also earning All-Pro honors.
Dallas has more work to do in this department, including working on a cap-saving extension for Dak Prescott and trying to deal with the headache of the Zack Martin holdout. But this is a major Cowboys move ... and a big check coming from Jerry Jones.
