All Smiles: New Cowboys QB Trey Lance Reveals 1st Priority After Trade

Trey Lance is now a Dallas Cowboy, and he revealed that upon hearing the news that he would be joining the NFC heavyweight, he couldn't help but smile.

Things weren't going well for Trey Lance in San Francisco, some of it through no fault of his own. But as they say, change is as good as a holiday, and when the Dallas Cowboys came calling, the escape route revealed itself.

Losing out to both Brock Purdy and Sam Darnold was a tough pill to swallow, and once the writing was on the wall for his time in San Francisco, he wasn't fussed about his next destination ... but when Jerry Jones and the Cowboys made the call, his emotions quickly changed.

"I really tried to not expect anything one way or another, but I can say that when I heard it was the Cowboys, I had a big smile on my face," said Lance on Tuesday in his first interview as a Cowboy. "I'm very excited to be here. … I believe that everything happens for a reason. I believe I'm here for a reason and, regardless of what it is, I'm here to try and find a way to help this team."

Helping the team now means learning coach Mike McCarthy's "Texas Coast Offense" and, perhaps more importantly, getting to know his new teammates and coaching staff.

But as far as helping the Cowboys this season, Lance is under no illusions of the position he finds himself in ... and he knows it's going to be a long road.

"First and foremost, I've gotta learn to have an opportunity to help anyone in the [QB] room and anyone on the offense," Lance said. "That's really what I'm focused on: learning enough to be able to contribute."

McCarthy stated that Lance has been in at The Star constantly since the Friday deal as he looks to get caught up on the offense. While leaving San Francisco wasn't necessarily on Lance's bingo card, he now gets a fresh start to try and revive his young career.

With Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush in the quarterback room, Lance will be in good hands as he learns the ropes and gets settled. The new QB mentioned Prescott in his first interview at The Star.

"He welcomed me with open arms,'' Lance said. "This morning was the first time I ran into him. But yeah, I mean, that meant a lot to me. I know this business is crazy.''
