Troy Aikman Reveals Cowboys' Biggest Problem; Is He Right?

Dallas Cowboys legend Troy Aikman believes the team's postseason struggles aren't a talent issue, but rather a timing one

The Dallas Cowboys have had many legends don the iconic star logo on their helmets, but few are as accomplished as former quarterback Troy Aikman.

Of course, Aikman was Dallas' starting quarterback for over a decade and helped the team win three Super Bowls in four years. He may not have been the most prolific quarterback from a statistical standpoint, but he did oversee the most successful stretch in the Cowboys' storied history.

Since retiring, Aikman has been a renowned commentator for over two decades now, just moving from FOX to ESPN last year. However, he has never shied away from commenting on his former team's affairs. Just recently, Aikman shared what he believes is the Cowboys biggest problem as they look reach heights not seen since he was under center. He feels that the Cowboys' struggles aren't due to a lack of talent, but rather due to poor timing.

“They are really good, and they’ve got really good players,” Aikman told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “The organization has done a fantastic job. I think the coaches have done a great job. The players. All of it. They have won a lot of games. The problem for them, and they don’t need me to tell them this, they just have not played their best football when the games have mattered the most.”

The Cowboys have made the playoffs in five of the last nine seasons, and have won at least 12 games in four of those seasons. Despite being among the NFL's best teams in those seasons, they have fallen short of the NFC Championship Game each time. Most of their recent playoff defeats were winnable games, but the Cowboys weren't at their best for the biggest moments.

To finally end their 28-year title drought, Aikman knows the Cowboys must overcome this mental hurdle in January.

“You say, ‘How do you change that?’ No one has the answer to that,” Aikman said. “I don’t have the answer to that. For our teams (in the ‘90s), the reason we succeeded and did what we were able to do, the reason teams all win Super Bowls, is they play their best football in the biggest games.

“That’s the challenge for each and everyone of those players.”

Even though he can be very critical at times, Aikman still believes in his former team. He added that he is pulling for the Cowboys to end their championship drought to, and believes quarterback Dak Prescott can lead them to the promised land.

“Hopefully this will be the year they get over the hump. I’m pulling for them,” Aikman said. “I’ve said it many times, I’m a big fan of Dak and I’d like to see him bring a world championship back to Dallas. It’s been a long time.”
