Cowboys 3 Camp Stars, Offense: Tyron on 'Comfort' And Chemistry

Dallas Cowboys stalwart Tyron Smith is back to his normal left tackle position, with second-year player Tyler Smith moving to left guard, and the duo is working on developing a connection on the field. Three stars from the first day in pads ...

The Dallas Cowboys offensive line is all about familiarity, and for veteran Tyron Smith, he is back in his "usual" left tackle position. After the hamstring tear that had him out for the majority of the season, rookie Tyler Smith stepped in and performed well.

But now, as part of the "best five," Tyron is moving back to left tackle, with Tyler now moving inside to left guard. With the duo not having played much football together as a "tandem," training camp is where chemistry building happens.

So with a week of camp now in the books, and with Monday's first day in pads under their belts, how is that developing? Our Three Stars from the workout ...

STAR 1 - THE TACKLES It's not that DeMarcus Lawrence and Micah Parsons didn't also have their moments - they did. (See Micah below ... wow.) But Tyron and Tyler made their presence felt. ... and if Tyron is "comfortable,'' Cowboys Nation should be comfortable.

"It's the first week, and we've got to get on the same page together, but we're getting there," said Tyron Smith. "Me and Tyler gotta get our own thing going on our side. The more we work, the more comfortable we get with each other and the work will speak for itself."

With Tyler Smith filling in well for Tyron last season, the veteran was moved to right tackle so as to not upset the rhythm created by the rookie, and as expected, Tyron didn't miss a beat.

But now, as training camp ramps up with padded practices, Smith is back in his usual position and back in a familiar situation.

"I'm back [to being] comfortable," said Tyron. "I've been playing left for a long time. I'm just back to my normal spot and I'm knocking the rust off right now."

Being back in his usual position, protecting Dak Prescott's blindside, the rust can't be on for too long, but Smith is one of the best left tackles of his generaion, so we imagine he will pick things up rather quickly.

With Tyler alongside him, the pair will look to form a formidable combination that many hope will be a big reason why the Cowboys might end their long-standing championship drought. And for one day? Comfort and chemistry made them a winner.

STAR 2: ANOTHER JALEN We don't want to be dismissive here, but we will first note that receiver is the easiest place to be a star ... until the actual games start. Having said that, seventh-round rookie Jalen Brooks impressed while getting some snaps with the first team.

Meanwhile, Simi Fehoko, trying to keep pace with No. 4 wideout Jalen Tolbert, looked smooth in tracking a deep ball to make a nice over-the-shoulder catch.

STAR 3: THE BACKUP BACK Running back Ronald Jones participated in the practice on a limited basis before the NFL announced he has been suspended two games for violating the league's performance-enhancing policy. Enter ...

Rico Dowdle as the first back mentioned by coach Mike McCarthy in his roundup of the guys behind Tony Pollard.

"I'll tell you, I'm loving Rico," McCarthy said. "And it's great to have him back. Malik [Davis] has taken that jump that we're looking for. Those two guys have really jumped out."

Responded a smiling Dowdle after the workout: "Just want to stay on the right track and stay on that good side of him. Keep doing what the coaches like me doing. Hard work and just try to win a spot. But obviously, that's nice hearing that from coach McCarthy."
