Cowboys VIDEO EXCLUSIVE: KaVontae Turpin Reveals 4-TD Goal
FRISCO - Dallas Cowboys receiver KaVontae Turpin is doing flips for the NFL season to start. Literally.
With a quickness that rivals his foot speed, Turpin leaps off the ground and tucks his feet to complete a perfect backflip, grabbing the attention of everyone at Cowboys training camp in Oxnard, California.
"I did gymnastics when I was young and I can flip, for real," Turpin said in an exclusive interview.
Defying gravity is no problem for Turpin, who at 5-foot-9 can also slam dunk with ease and creativity with tomahawk and windmill dunks on the basketball court.
Entering his second season with the Cowboys, Turpin looks to build on a successful rookie year in which he earned a Pro Bowl spot as a return man, averaging 10.4 yards per punt return and 24.2 yards per kick return.
When Turpin fields a punt, the buzz in AT&T Stadium is palpable and Cowboys fans at home hold their breath, hoping to witness his electrifying speed take a return to the house. His main goal for this season is to score his first NFL touchdown. ... and then do it again and again.
"I gotta touch the paint. I need to get at least four touchdowns this season on special teams," Turpin said.
Turpin, the best returner in TCU history, spent this offseason in the weight room, with the goal to add about 10 pounds to get to 165 pounds.
"I used to eat bad. So eating was one of my biggest focuses," said, Turpin who added that now he drinks a lot of smoothies filled with vegetables and devours steak.
Coach Mike McCarthy plans to utilize Turpin's unique skillset on offense, too.
"I look at him now as a receiver that rotates in there, not someone that we just have to put in there for certain things," McCarthy said. "That’s a credit to what he’s done and Robert Prince (position coach) has done with him.”
“He’s got a unique skillset, got an incredible stride length, and his quickness speaks for itself," McCarthy said. "He’s done something almost every day that makes the tape, the correction, and highlight tapes that we do. He’s having a good camp.”
Dallas is "fine-tuning details" as McCarthy takes over as play-caller for the departed Kellen Moore. Turpin called the offense "explosive" and easier than last season.
"I feel more comfortable going into this year," Turpin said. "Guys don't have to think (in McCarthy's offense.) They just go out there and play fast."
The 2023 Dallas squad hopes to improve on a 12-5 campaign and usurp the Philadelphia Eagles as NFC East Division champions.
Turpin certainly has the speed to make a difference on special teams and offense this season ... And when he gets into the end zone, watch for that flip.
