Cowboys' Deuce Vaughn A Full-Time 'Weapon,' A Big-Deal' RB, Says Will McClay
The Dallas Cowboys added to their running back room with Kansas State's Deuce Vaughn taken in the sixth round of the NFL Draft. ... and the team's scouting report on him makes the diminutive rookie sound like much more than a "gimmick guy.''
Cowboys personnel boss Will McClay knows what a talent they have on their hands, and speaking on 105.3 The Fan, McClay expressed excitement that Vaughn managed to find his way onto Dallas' roster.
"The No. 1 thing is (we're) getting a hell of a football player, a guy that can win in space, create their own space, and do explosive things," McClay said. "Deuce's done that ever since he's been in high school. Getting him and adding him as a weapon was a huge deal."
Vaughn at the college level certainly is a weapon on the football field. In two of his three college seasons, Vaughn surpassed 1,000+ receiving yards while averaging 5.5 yards per carry during his college career. His ability in the open field is what might just attract coach Mike McCarthy to get him the ball. Vaughn is as slippery as they come, and that was evident several times while playing for Kansas State.
The Cowboys will now put aside the emotion of the pick - his father, Chris, is the assistant college scouting director - and work to unlock Vaughn in a way that McClay tells us makes him a full-time-level back. "You can run your (regular) offense through him,'' McClay said.
The running back room (even with Ezekiel Elliott exiting) is crowded with Tony Pollard, Malik Davis, Ronald Jones, and Rico Dowdle, so Vaughn must do all the right things this offseason to move up the depth chart. But if McClay is right about Vaughn as a "weapon''? The depth chart will sort itself out soon enough in a positive way.
