Dalton Schultz Waiting: Best Free Agent Available - Should Cowboys Call?
FRISCO - Tight end Dalton Schultz remains unsigned as NFL free agency rolls on. One of Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott's favorite targets, Schultz will likely be finding a new home.
Unless the Cowboys want to make one more call …
There have been rumors about the dynamic pass-catcher heading to the Los Angeles Chargers with former Cowboys offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, but there’s no movement yet on where Schultz will land. The durable 26-year-old missed only two games over the past four seasons.
Among the top-tier talents waiting to be signed, ESPN ranked Schultz as the best player available.
Schultz's postseason production -- 12 receptions, 122 yards and three touchdowns in two games -- should erase any questions about a knee injury that slowed him earlier in the 2022 season. He's a vertical seam stretcher who can be schemed on play-action or boot to use his ability to run after the catch. He has some speed when he gets free. Plus, Schultz -- another guy who played on the franchise tag -- won't turn 27 until July.
Thus far in free agency, the tight end market hasn't been dazzling. Hayden Hurst received the biggest deal: Hurst signed a three-year, $21.75M deal with the Carolina Panthers.
Without Schultz, second-year Cowboys tight ends in Peyton Hendershot and Jake Ferguson will look to step up in. Schultz was Dallas' second-leading receiver behind CeeDee Lamb with 577 receiving yards and five touchdowns on 57 receptions. In their rookie seasons, Ferguson and Hendershot combined for 277 receiving yards and four touchdowns on 30 receptions and showed a lot of promise.
Perhaps, Dallas will also target a tight end with the No. 26 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.
Many free agents have already agreed to terms with teams. However, Schultz, Bobby Wagner and Odell Beckham Jr. - all of whom are tied to the Cowboys in some way - are among the top players still available. … and maybe Dallas should be checking in on all three.
